TO THE NEW WORLD!

This morning, in an hour and a half, MJ and I head for Tucson International, embarking for Hawai'i for 21 days on the Big Island. Airplane arrives Kailua-Kona at around 7pm HST (3 hours earlier than Tucson time). From there we circumnavigate the island (on land, of course), slowly, clockwise, going north along the Kohala coast, turning east and up to Waimea, passing through Waimea and down to the Hamakua coast. Our first stop is Honoka'a, getting there tonight and remaining a couple of days at a B&B, mauka (toward the mountain) from the town. Then south along the coast to Hilo and Puna, and on to Volcano Village, for a few days in a cabin and a return to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Then south through Ka'u, rounding just above the southernmost point in the US of A, and north along the Kona Coast to Kealakekua, where we will reside a few days at a B&B high above the bay. Then north through Kona and back to the South Kohala area, where we finish off at Mauna Lani Hotel and explore the North Kohala area. Along the way there will be hikes, snorkeling, photography, filming, golf, swimming, historical asides, perhaps a little boating if there be lava flows reaching the ocean. And if we can, to the top of Mauna Kea (13,796 feet above sea level) and the astronomical observatories. This blog will document the trip as opportunity avails. Comments are welcome, but any "GFY's" will be summarily deleted. For perspective, one can refer to the map below. The north-south diameter of the island is ~ 90 miles, west-east ~ 60 miles. The Hawai'i state fish is the humuhumunukunukuapua'a. It's pronounced just like it looks.
